I wish my life was boring.

Book Log

This is a book log of all books I’ve read since the beginning of 2007. Ratings accompany all listings; notes and reviews accompany some.

I used to read about 70-120 books per year, though I’ve fallen down to about 40-50 each year because I am in school more than full-time year-round.

Ratings Guide

Note: I also use half-stars. As you might guess, you should considering it part way between the two numbers listed below.

Books Read in 2009

So far, I’ve actually kept my list updated this year. Very exciting!

  1. Sanchez, Alex — So Hard to Say
    • Date Completed: February 15
    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: Very compelling characters. Xio definitely isn’t forgettable. Very little LGBT middle grade fiction exists so I was definitely happy to find this!
  2. Hartinger, Brent — The Order of the Poison Oak
    • Date Completed: February 18
    • Series: Geography Club #2
    • Rating: ★★★★☆
    • Thoughts: Some of my favorite memories ever involve summer camp, though I was never a councelor, unfortunately. :( I loved this book though. Not only did it make me rather nostalgic, the characters are fantastic.
  3. Hartinger, Brent — Split Screen: Attack of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies / Bride of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies
    • Date Completed: February 19
    • Series: Geography Club #3
    • Rating: ★★★★☆
    • Thoughts: I was really glad we got to see more of Min in this book! Also, I LOVE split books–ones where you can choose which half to read first. And zombies!
  4. Cabot, Meg — Forever Princess
    • Date Completed: February 21
    • Series: The Princess Diaries #10
    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: I thought it was a pretty good ending to a surprisingly hilarious series. I’m still sad that we actually know The Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn in the Chili’s name. Up until he became a real character, I laughed every single time he was mentioned.
  5. Warren, Tracy Anne — The Husband Trap
    • Date Completed: February 25
    • Series: Trap Trilogy #1
    • Rating: ★★☆☆☆
    • Thoughts: I’d never really read a romance novel before, particularly a historical romance. Gotta say, was not enthused. “To curl” is this writer’s favorite verb on the entire damn planet. I was determinted to finish my experiment though and continued the series.
  6. Warren, Tracy Anne — The Wedding Trap
    • Date Completed: February 26
    • Series: Trap Trilogy #2
    • Rating: ★★☆☆☆
    • Thoughts: Yep, still not thrilled. She’s still lovin’ the verb, “to curl” like whoa.
  7. Warren, Tracy Anne — The Wife Trap
    • Date Completed: February 27
    • Series: Trap Trilogy #3
    • Rating: ★★☆☆☆
    • Thoughts: So. much. curling.
  8. Sanchez, Alex — Rainbow High
    • Date Completed: February 28
    • Series: Rainbow Boys #2
    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: I’d meant to read this for ages! It was always checked out at the school library when I was working there despite the fact we had several copies.
  9. Sanchez, Alex — The God Box
    • Date Completed: March 1
    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: The God Box was fantastic, plain and simple. It delved into some very important issues regarding Christianity and being gay. Heartbreaking, at points, but reassuring at others.
  10. Myracle, Lauren — Kissing Kate
    • Date Completed: March 2
    • Rating: ★★★☆☆
    • Thoughts: G-d, I wanted to hug Lissa in this book. I can imagine this book helping out many kids who are or have been in Lissa’s position.
  11. Stone, Lyn — The Highland Wife
    • Date Completed: March 8
    • Rating: ★★☆☆☆
    • Thoughts: Why? I seriously read this book because I wanted to know how the hero managed to meet the heroine, marry her, travel across the country with her, sleep with her, begin a battle over her…without her realizing he’s deaf? And the answer, in case you’re wondering, is that she’s exceptionally dense.
  12. [Anthology] — Love is Hell
    • Date Completed: March 15
    • Rating: ★★★★☆
    • Thoughts: Fantastic. All the stories in this book were exceptional and awesome! Justine Larbalestier’s short was heartbreaking and Scott Westerfeld created a fantastic, interesting world with his. I wish both of these had been expanded into full-length novels! I would have preordered them the second they hit Amazon.
  13. Goodman, Allegra — The Other Side of the Island
    • Date Completed: March 16
    • Rating: ★★★★½
    • Thoughts: I’d pretty much kill for a sequel, though I’m almost positive this is a standalone novel. Positively fantastic worldbuilding. I think the exchange that shows you exactly how different Honor’s reality is from our own, is the following:

      • Honor to her parents: “What’s a grandmother?”
      • Honor’s mother: “It’s just an old woman.”
      • Honor’s father: “It’s a mother of a mother, or the mother of a father.”
      • [...]
      • Honor: “Did I have a grandmother?”
      • Honor’s mother, puzzled: “Yes, I think so.”
      • Honor: “Was she your mother?”
      • Honor’s mother: “She must have been.”
      • [...]
      • Honor: “Why did you forget?”
      • Honor’s mother: “Everyone does.”
  14. Supplee, Suzanne — When Irish Guys are Smiling
    • Date Completed: March 17
    • Series: S.A.S.S. – Students Across the Seven Seas
    • Rating: ★★½☆☆
    • Thoughts: It was entertaining enough, but I couldn’t bring myself to care much about the main character.
  15. Gerber, Linda — Now and Zen
    • Date Completed: March 17
    • Series: S.A.S.S. – Students Across the Seven Seas
    • Rating: ★★½☆☆
    • Thoughts: Same as with When Irish Guys are Smiling. Entertaining enough, but lacking in interesting characterization.
  16. Johnson, Denis — Jesus’ Son
    • Date Completed: April 19
    • Rating: ★★★★☆
    • Thoughts: This was great. Very quick read, very disorienting (in a good way–it enhances the material), and parts of it were alternately heartbreaking and hilarious. Some scenes definitely stuck with me long after finishing this book.
  17. Rulfo, Juan — Pedro Páramo
    • Date Completed: April 28
    • Rating: ★★½☆☆
    • Thoughts: I understand that this is a great piece of literature or whatever. I still hated it. With a motherfucking passion, basically. Fucking Cómala.
  18. Jellen, Michelle — Spain or Shine
    • Date Completed: May 1
    • Series: S.A.S.S. – Students Across the Seven Seas
    • Rating: ★★½☆☆
    • Thoughts: Meh.
  19. Cross, Sarah — Dull Boy
    • Date Completed: May 31
    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: The build-up was amazing, but the way it was pulled off left a little to be desired. I’m still looking forward to a sequel!
  20. Brown, Rita Mae — Rubyfruit Jungle
    • Date Completed: June 22
    • Rating: ★★★★½
    • Thoughts: Why the hell didn’t I read this when I was about 16? I probably would have reread it at least 10 times since then too, had I read it before!
  21. Kizer, Amber — Meridian
    • Date Completed: August 17
    • Series: Meridian #1
    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: The premise was very compelling! I’m looking forward to the sequel.
  22. Caine, Rachel — Glass Houses
    • Date Completed: August 23
    • Series: Morganville Vampires #1
    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: This series is surprisingly good. Some parts are very clichéd, to be quite honest, but very entertaining with some fantastic surprises. And one surprise that should not have been surprising to you if you’re an observant person.
  23. Mallery, Susan — Sweet Talk
    • Date Completed: August 23
    • Series: Bakery Sisters #1
    • Rating: ★★½☆☆
    • Thoughts: Much like my historical romance experiment, this was my adult chick lit foray. I tried to enjoy it. I did. There was even food. I love books involving food. But how many 28-year-old worldly virgins can this rock have?
  24. Mallery, Susan — Sweet Spot
    • Date Completed: August 24
    • Series: Bakery Sisters #2
    • Rating: ★★☆☆☆
    • Thoughts: Was this actually necessary?
  25. Mallery, Susan — Sweet Trouble
    • Date Completed: August 26
    • Series: Bakery Sisters #3
    • Rating: ★★☆☆☆
    • Thoughts: This series pretty much confirmed why I don’t read much adult chick lit. :/
  26. Cabot, Meg — Size 12 is Not Fat
    • Date Completed: September 2
    • Series: Heather Wells #1
    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: Meg Cabot is basically ridiculously hilarious and her books are addicting. It’s just a fact. This is adult chick lit I can get behind. Also, a non-YA mystery I can get behind! Not gruesome, thankfully. I’m still waiting for the fourth book in this series to come out.
  27. Rees Brennan, Sarah — The Demon’s Lexicon
    • Date Completed: September 4
    • Rating: ★★★★☆
    • Thoughts: Wow. Just wow. Compelling, fantastic urban fantasy, heartbreaking. I’m preordering the sequel the moment it’s available.
  28. Collins, Suzanne — The Hunger Games
    • Date Completed: September 15
    • Series: The Hunger Games #1
    • Rating: ★★★★★
    • Thoughts: I thought I would die without the sequel right then and there. This is one of the very, very few books that gets a full five stars from me. Heartbreaking, chilling, gorgeous, fantastic worldbuilding, addictive, and also one of the most fucking nerve-wracking and stressful books I’ve ever read in a completely fantastic way. Anything can, and does, happen. Also, if you don’t tear up at all during this book, I’m almost positive you don’t have a soul. Just FYI.
  29. Joseph, Danielle — Shrinking Violet
    • Date Completed: September 23
    • Rating: ★★½☆☆
    • Thoughts: I spent 95% of this book wondering why I was reading this book. :/ It was entertaining enough, but I wish I’d read one of the millions of other books on my to-read list.
  30. Collins, Suzanne — Catching Fire
    • Date Completed: September 24
    • Series: The Hunger Games #2
    • Rating: ★★★★★
    • Thoughts: I would actually pay a billion dollars if it meant i had the final installment right here, right now.
  31. Larbalestier, Justine — Liar
    • Date Completed: October 2
    • Rating: ★★★★½
    • Thoughts: Fantastic. So much different than her other books, all of which I loved as well. I have no idea if anything I read in this entire book was true, but that’s what makes it beautiful. I loved Micah to bits.
  32. Ryan, Carrie — The Forest of Hands and Teeth
    • Date Completed: October 3
    • Series: The Forest of Hands and Teeth #1
    • Rating: ★★★★☆
    • Thoughts: Zombies! Great worldbuilding. Definitely different than any other zombie book I’ve read. Need sequel. Need it now. You don’t even know.
  33. Dole, Mayra Lazara — Down to the Bone
    • Date Completed: November 4
    • Rating: ★★★★☆
    • Thoughts: This book was awesome. Dole spends a lot of time talking about Cuban food and, damn, it makes you hungry as HELL.
  34. Rowen, Michelle — Demon Princess: Reign or Shine
    • Date Completed: November 6
    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: I was surprised this book was as good as it was. I wasn’t especially compelled by description and the cover doesn’t really fit the feel of the book at all–it reminded me of all those whiny rich white girl books that are ever so popular and that I tend to loathe. And yet, this book was actually awesome and I loved the characters! Very entertaining, interesting story. I can’t wait for the sequel!

Books Read in 2008

Unfortunately, I slacked off majorly in 2008 at maintaining this log.

  1. Cabot, Meg — Big Boned
    • Series: Heather Wells #3
    • Rating: ★★★☆☆
    • Thoughts: I’m pretty much just addicted to Meg Cabot.
  2. Hoffman, Alice — Green Angel
    • Rating: ★★★☆☆
    • Thoughts: Tragic and disjointed, but in a way that reveals what the character is going through.
  3. Green, John — An Abundance of Katherines
    • Rating: ★★★★☆
    • Thoughts: John Green, as always, is hilarious. I really, really loved the opening to this novel. The friendship between Colin and Hassan was great.
  4. Gould, Steven — Jumper
    • Series: Jumper #1
    • Rating: ★★★☆☆
    • Thoughts: I hadn’t even seen the film, but I just could not imagine Hayden Christensen in this part while reading it. I’m definitely putting the sequels on my to-read list, though I think it’d also do well as a stand alone. Not perfect, but very entertaining.
  5. Doctorow, Cory — Little Brother
    • Rating: ★★★★☆
    • Thoughts: Fantastic.
  6. Marr, Melissa — Wicked Lovely
    • Series: Wicked Lovely #1
    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: I actually really liked this, though not as much as other similar novels–it did have an original take I hadn’t read before so I quite liked that. Throughout the entire book, whenever Keenan the faerie was mentioned, all I could think of was Keenan & Kel. Who loves orange soda?
  7. Riordan, Rick — The Battle of the Labyrinth
    • Series: Percy Jackson and the Olympians #4
    • Rating: ★★★★½
    • Thoughts: Rick Riordan is my hero. This entire series is pretty much a league of their own. When people ask for recommendations for similar novels, particularly involving Greek mythology in this manner, I come up with nothing to list. Fantastically original and in each new installment is a new and hilarious way to interpret myths for the modern day.
  8. Murdock, Catherine — Princess Ben
    • Rating: ★★★☆☆
    • Thoughts: Entertaining, great fairy tale. I love self-resucing princess stories.
  9. Calonita, Jen — Secrets of My Hollywood Life
    • Series: Secrets of My Hollywood Life #1
    • Rating: ★★½☆☆
    • Thoughts: :/
  10. Cabot, Meg — Princess Mia
    • Series: The Princess Diaries #9
    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: I really, really wished I could smack some sense into Mia Thermopolis’ brain for 85% of this series, and yet I love her anyway.
  11. Peterfreund, Diana — Secret Society Girl
    • Series: Secret Society Girl #1
    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: I realized that I don’t read many books set in college! I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the rest of this series. :)
  12. Meyer, Stephenie — Breaking Dawn
    • Series: Twilight #4
    • Rating: ★★☆☆☆
    • Thoughts: Why, G-d, why? Also, it was so gross. D:

    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: Maureen Johnson is absolutely hysterical and this was no exception.

    • Rating: ★★★½☆
    • Thoughts: Definitely an interesting premise and an awesome title. I really liked it! Well-executed.

    • Thoughts: G-d, I love this book. My favorite by Maureen Johnson and I love all of her books! I love Meg more than words can say.
  17. Scott, Elizabeth — Stealing Heaven
    • Rating: ★★★☆☆
    • Thoughts: Entertaining and an interesting idea.
  18. Johnson, Maureen — Suite Scarlett
    • Rating: ★★★★☆
    • Thoughts: I am still dyyying to read the sequel! I preorded it the second it was available on Amazon. This is the perfect example of why I love Maureen Johnson: The book is crazy, hilarious, and has awesome characters.
  19. Johnson, Maureen — Devilish
    • Rating: ★★★★☆
    • Thoughts: Ha, this is simply beautiful and, as always, hilarious. The idea of Catholic schoolgirls selling their soul to the devil for popularity is pretty amazing on its own, but then you add in everything else and…gah.
  20. Pfeffer, Susan Beth — Life as We Knew It
    • Rating: ★★★★☆
    • Thoughts: Heartbreaking and gripping. I couldn’t put it down. I read it at a non-sheltered bus stop in the rain, pressed as close to a tree as possible, hoping for shelter.
  21. Johnson, Maureen — The Key to the Golden Firebird
    • Rating: ★★★★☆
    • Thoughts: <3
  22. Garden, Nancy — Annie on My Mind

  64. Cabot, Meg — Size 14 is Not Fat Either

Reading Habits

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ll consume almost any form of media, particularly books. Often people have asked me, “Well, what sort of books do you read?” Then I’ll say, “Anything.” And then they’ll say, “But what do you read the most?” Then I internally sigh. Really, I will read pretty much anything.

When I was younger, I rarely read books geared for my age group. I spent my last years of high school as a student library assistant and ended up reading a lot of awesome young adult books. Now I primarily read YA in all genres.

A few of the genres I’m particularly enjoying right now include retold fairy tales, dystopian fiction, apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic fiction (aka all the fiction that makes me fucking paranoid), urban fantasy, LGBT fiction, and recently, manga. In case you hadn’t guessed from the above paragraph, I love these genres even more when they come in YA form.

If you would like to recommend a book for me to read, please leave a comment.

I would recommend the following book for you to read. Though the description does not do the book justice. It is a wonderful book.

    Title: The Thirteenth Tale
    Author: Diana Setterfield
    Publisher: Washington Square Press
    ISBN: 0743298039
    Description:
Sometimes, when you open the door to the past, what you confront is your destiny. Reclusive author Vida Winter, famous for her collection of twelve enchanting stories, has spent the past six decades penning a series of alternate lives for herself. Now old and ailing, she is ready to reveal the truth about her extraordinary existence and the violent and tragic past she has kept secret for so long. Calling on Margaret Lea, a young biographer troubled by her own painful history, Vida disinters the life she meant to bury for good. Margaret is mesmerized by the author’s tale of gothic strangeness — featuring the beautiful and willful Isabelle, the feral twins Adeline and Emmeline, a ghost, a governess, a topiary garden and a devastating fire. Together, Margaret and Vida confront the ghosts that have haunted them while becoming, finally, transformed by the truth themselves.
