I wish my life was boring.

Let It Snow

Today is my great-grandmother’s 100th birthday!

We were going to have a huge party today, but due to Snowpocalypse ’08, nobody from out of state can get here and most people in-state (including my family!) are stranded as well. Plus she (the birthday girl!) has a terribly unfortunate cold.

My aunt doesn’t want to deal with weather issues again so she wants to postpone until February.

Now, my great-grandma might be healthier than the rest of my family combined…but 100 is really effing old. You cannot postpone someone’s birthday party for two months–especially if they are into the triple digits.

My uncle is going off about how he’s never planning a birthday in December ever again. Because we get actual snow every five years or so? Seriously?

He’s even angry that she “decided” to get sick. Really? She decided to get sick? That’s a new one.

I love my uncle, but needless to say, he can be a bit of a self-centered bastard. My mom showed great restraint in not strangling him over the phone when she heard that.

Ugh. It’s disgusting weather here today too!
I hope your family gets to celebrate you great-grandmother’s 100th birthday sometime soon!

That’s awesome that she’s lived so long. If you get a chance, it will almost definitely be worth your while to get some recording instrument and just sit down with her, get her to tell you stories of her life while you record them. I love hearing stories from my dad about what my grandmother did during WWII, for example. It’s just fascinating hearing first-hand what happened at the big moments in history, or how the world’s changed since they were a child.

Also, thanks for commenting on my site. I’d never visited yours, that I remember, so I came and I like it and I linked it! :)

@Sarah: That’s what I’ve been thinking. She’s been thinking of writing down her life story–she asked my mom and I if she should. Resounding yes from us. Apparently my aunt and uncle discouraged her, though I cannot imagine why. Then again, they’re mad at her for “deciding” to get sick, so clearly, their opinion cannot be trusted. ;)

And thanks for the link! :)

@Holly: It seems nobody I talk to is happy with their weather as of late aside from my aunt (not the one in the post–other side of the family) in California. She’s quite happy with her sun today.

I hate it when snow storms ruin plans. But WOW, 100 years old is pretty momentous! I hope you get to celebrate soon :D

Your uncle sounds so insensitive :(

Wow… 100 years old, that’s amazing. She must have some incredible stories to tell!

Wow, 100 years! None of my grandparents made it that far, though I do remember vaguely what they’ve told me before since I was about 8 when my grandmother passed away. My other grandmother was already hospitalised since I was 4, and she didn’t talk much so I don’t remember much about her, only that she has the same birthmark like me :P

I’ve never experienced snow before, so I don’t really know how bad it is, but judging from what you’ve said I’m sure it’s really a lot of snow over there!

I had to think for a moment – new domain, new name… I’ m used to V and Briarr (was it?) At first I thought some chick stole your whole layout… but I figured it’s probably just you :)

Anyway… 100 years old! That’s great! My moms birthday is that same day.

  8. Donna says:

@Aki: All my other grandparents have passed away, unfortunately. She’s my only remaining grandparent. She outlived all of her children too. :(

@Tracy: Yep, it was briar.cc, which now forwards here. Donna’s my first name and Victoria’s my middle. I tried putting V in the sidebar to avoid confusion, but I think I failed. D:
